Hello, I'm Sagal, an African Feminist, Solo Traveler, and Grassroots Activist

A brief profile of myself

I am British-Somali (London-raised), currently exploring and reconnecting with our nomadic roots back in East Africa.

I am interested in everything relating to culture, history, story-telling, and solo traveling. If I am not re-imagining new futures and possibilities, you can find me learning how to sail a dhow across our beautiful Indian ocean.

About me in Relation to my Work

Intrigued by my community experiences, trauma, and memories of Somalia's pre- and post-civil war, I became highly interested in understanding how societies that have experienced a form of crisis, whether this is an outbreak of a civil war or a collapse of an authoritarian regime, can recover and re-build itself and most importantly transition towards an equitable peace.

Over the years, I further explored this interest by working across fragile and conflict-affected countries like Somalia, Yemen, Sudan, Nigeria, and Myanmar, building strong networks and connections with local community and civil society groups, designing and implementing various projects on building inclusive peacebuilding, conflict prevention and response, and community resilience building.

As an African woman operating within the aid sector that is embedded in neo-colonial patriarchal practices and unequal hegemonic power dynamics between the global South and North- My work is deeply influenced and guided by a decolonized approach that seeks to disrupt, challenge, and revise the current systems and provide new ways of thinking and learning.
